RSC Case Packers: Case Erectors & Case Sealers

Automatic case packing in American boxes for stand-up pouches and flow packs.

What Is RSC Case Packing?

An RSC (Regular Slotted Container), also known as an American box, is the most common corrugated shipping case: four flaps of equal length on the top and on the bottom that meet at the centre. RSC case packing is the automatic process of erecting the box, loading the product from the top and sealing it with tape or hot melt. Mespack RSC case packers combine a case erector, a top load case packer and a case sealer in one end-of-line solution for flexible pouches, flat or upright position.

From Case Erector to Case Sealing

RSC case packing step 1: case feeding, flat American boxes taken from the magazine

1. Case Feeding

Flat American boxes are taken one by one from the magazine.

RSC case packing step 2: case erecting, the automatic case erector opens the box

2. Case Erecting

The automatic case erector opens the box and closes the bottom flaps.

RSC case packing step 3: top loading, products grouped and loaded from the top

3. Top Loading

Products are grouped and loaded from the top by a picking system or delta robot.

RSC case packing step 4: case sealing, the case sealer closes the top flaps

4. Case Sealing

The case sealer closes the top flaps with tape or hot melt.

Case Packing Machines

EF100 & MCP

EF Series

Pouch case packer, pouches in a vertical position
An acceleration belt and an indexing system align the pouches; a picking system groups them and introduces the whole group into the American box at once.

MCP Series

Robotic case packer, pouches in a horizontal position
A vision system detects the position of each pouch and a delta robot places it flat inside the box. Automatic box format changeover from the HMI.

RSC Case Packing FAQs

RSC stands for Regular Slotted Container, the most common style of corrugated shipping case, also known as an American box. It has four flaps of equal length on the top and on the bottom; the two outer flaps meet at the centre when the case is closed. It corresponds to FEFCO style 0201.

An RSC case packer is an end-of-line machine that erects the American box, loads the product into it and seals it. A case erector, also called a box erector machine, only forms the box and closes its bottom, and a case sealer, also known as a carton sealer or box sealing machine, only closes it. Mespack RSC solutions cover the full process.

The flat case is taken from the magazine, opened and its bottom flaps are closed. The products are aligned, grouped and loaded from the top by a picking system or a delta robot. Finally the top flaps are folded and the case is sealed with adhesive tape or hot melt, ready for palletising.

With an RSC case packing machine a pre-glued American box is erected, loaded from the top and sealed with tape or hot melt. In wrap around case packing a flat blank is folded and glued around the product group. RSC cases are standard and easy to source; wrap around cases fit the product more tightly and use less cardboard. See the full secondary packaging comparison.

Mespack, a Duravant company based in Barcelona, manufactures RSC case packers for flexible packaging: the EF100, a top load case packer that loads groups of pouches in a vertical position, and the MCP, a robotic case packer with vision system and delta robot that places pouches in a horizontal position.

Consider the product (stand-up pouches, flow packs or cases), how it should lie inside the box (vertical or horizontal), the box sizes, the target output, the sealing method and the space available. For pouches loaded upright as a group, Mespack offers the EF100; for pouches placed flat by a pick and place robot, the MCP.
